MEDIA RELEASE

The Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra, one of the most distinguished amateur orchestras in the country, once again presents a varied and exciting selection of programmes for its 2004-05 Subscription Season.

The season opens on Saturday 9th October with a concert devoted to the music of Delius, Elgar and Holst, who all died in 1934 – 70 years ago.  The three featured works are: The Walk to the Paradise Garden,  Enigma Variations and The Planets.

The popular Christmas Concert  on Sunday 5 December is, as ever, designed to appeal to all generations.  Jeffery Dench returns to narrate The Snowman;  and other music will include Vaughan Williams Overture The Wasps, Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King and Elfman's catchy theme music for The Simpsons.  The evening will include a quiz with plenty of prizes, and an opportunity for everyone to join in carol-singing.

This concert is supported by Alsters Kelley solicitors

On Saturday 5 March, international violinist  Madeleine  Mitchell joins the orchestra as soloist for the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.  The programme also features the same composer’s haunting overture Fingal’s Cave and Shostakovich's challenging and enigmatic Symphony No. 5

The work chosen to celebrate the orchestra’s  65th Anniversary is Elgar’s  masterpiece The Dream of Gerontius, with soloists Gaynor Keeble (mezzo soprano) James Gilchrist (tenor) and Michael Bundy (bass), together with the Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir, conducted by Janet Lincé.

The first three concerts in the series will all be conducted by the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor, Guy Woolfenden.    Of the new season, he says  “I am extremely excited by the programmes for the new Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra season.  The challenge of conducting Holst's Planets, Shostakovich's greatest symphony (No. 5), Elgar's wondrous Enigma Variations and many more challenging orchestral masterpieces is one that I am greatly looking forward to. Please continue to support your exciting local orchestra in its 65th season.”
