| Maurice Simmons
We are very sorry to report that, after a short illness, Maurice Simmons died on 6 December. Maurice was leader of the WSO's double bass section for many years and, as well as being responsible for the lower end of the orchestra's sound, brought his mischievous sense of fun to rehearsals. Many a time his sotto voce comments would cause the whole of the lower string section to collapse in laughter, sometimes to the bemusement of Guy and the upper strings. Maurice had many interests, particularly the Guide Dogs for the Blind, for which he organised an annual chamber orchestra concert with members drawn from the WSO. Rehearsals took place at his house and it was always pleasing to see that the concerts were well supported by large audiences, in no small part due to Maurice's efforts. Our thoughts are with Betty and the family. |

| Marie Curie Cancer Care
Once again, the orchestra linked up with Marie Curie Cancer Care as its chosen charity for the Christmas concert. The collection raised £219 and we would like to thank everyone who donated to this very worthwhile cause. |

| History of the WSO
For those members and friends of the WSO who have not yet bought a copy, the history of the orchestra written by Henry Rees is still available. The book runs to almost 100 pages and is illustrated with photos telling the story of the orchestra from its formation by Stanley Vann in 1940. It gives a fascinating insight to the orchestra's development and the many highlights over the years. Priced at £10 in a limited edition of 400 copies, please order your copy from Malcolm Rowson or Di Billington. All sales will help the orchestra's finances. |
